Lymphedema is the result of chronic swelling, usually found in the arm or leg. It is an accumulation of lymph fluid (protein and water) that becomes problematic. Lymphedema is usually associated with post-operative cancer patients who have had lymph nodes surgically removed and/or radiated.
Treatment consists of manual lymphatic drainage with massage, multi-layer compression bandages, therapeutic exercise and eventual fitting for a compression garment.
